The menstrual cycle (MC) is divided into two phases: the follicular phase and the luteal phase.

The follicular phase begins on the first day of the cycle and lasts about two weeks (based on the average 28-day cycle). At this time, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates the growth and maturation of the follicle (sac) in one of the two ovaries. The follicle produces one egg (it happens that the eggs are two or more – then if all the eggs are fertilized, the twins conceive) and produces the hormone estrogen, makes one egg and, at the same time, produces estrogen. Ovulation usually occurs on the 14th day of the cycle.

The luteal phase (from day 15 of the cycle to the first day of the next menstruation) is the period of production of estrogen and progesterone to create a favorable environment in the uterine mucosa (endometrium) for implantation of the egg if it was fertilized during intercourse. If the egg is not fertilized, then the woman will have another menstruation. If fertilization occurs, then the embryo will travel on a trip down the fallopian tube and after a few days, it will penetrate into the mucous membrane of the uterus.

The fertility of a man

When it comes to the male ability to conceive, it speaks of spermatogenesis. Sperm production begins in the testicles, from where it passes through the vas deferens into the seminal vesicles, where it is stored before ejaculation (ejaculation). Semen by 65% consists of fluid from seminal vesicles, 30% from fluid from the prostate and 5% from the spermatozoa. This sperm is considered “healthy” and is able to penetrate the cervix of a woman, pass through the fallopian tubes and fertilize the egg.

The age and lifestyle of a man can have an impact on the production of sperm. Factors such as excessive drinking, smoking, stress, diets (vitamin deficiency), sedentary lifestyle, obesity, cycling and even wearing narrow pants or trousers can play a negative role in the low number of spermatozoa. Therefore, not only a woman but also a man, it is extremely important to properly prepare for conception!

Several myths

Myth one: “I have no problems with the ability to conceive! I’m young)!”. Problems with conception affect not only people after 35 years! And in younger people, it may be difficult to conceive a child. Therefore, if you are younger than 35 and try to become pregnant without results for 12 cycles or more, talk to your gynecologist.

Myth two: “I already have children, so the conception of another child will not be a problem for me!” Unfortunately, this is not always so, many (already having children) couples are diagnosed with “secondary infertility.” If you already have children, but you can not conceive another child for a long time (at least 6 – 12 months in a row), consult a doctor.

Myth three: “All women ovulate on the 14th day!” This is not true. Ovulation primarily depends on the duration of the menstrual cycle. But even with the “typical”, 28-day cycle, many women ovulate later than 14 days. Therefore, before trying to become pregnant, look after your cycle.

Myth four: “Infertility is a woman’s problem” If a couple has problems with conception, then both partners should undergo a test to identify fertility problems, because, in 50% of cases, infertility is a consequence of problems in men, for example, inadequate sperm count.

Myth Five: “I did not have an orgasm, so I can not get pregnant” This is not true! Female orgasm has absolutely nothing to do with whether she will become pregnant or not!

Myth Six: “My husband has a low content of sperm. It seems that we will never have children. “The low number of spermatozoa is not equated to absolute infertility. The number of spermatozoa can be influenced by factors such as smoking, obesity, lack of vitamins and exercise, and often eliminating these negative factors helps to solve the problem. Every woman (and every couple) has reasons why they do not want to give birth to children until a certain moment. For example, someone wants to first learn, make a career, stand up, travel around the world or just live for yourself. But, when deciding to delay the birth of a child, you should know that as you grow older, it will be harder for you to become pregnant.

Your fertility and chances of conception will begin to decrease with each month, as soon as you cross the 30-year boundary. By the time you get close to 35 to 40, your chances of conception will be 50/50, and after 40 to 45 years – only 20-30% of the probability.
